Norwalk comes from “noyank,” an Algonquian word meaning “point of land.” Located in southwestern Connecticut and is approximately 21 miles long. It originates from Ridgefield, CT ponds; theses ponds emptied into the “Great Swamp,” a 500 acre river. The river is paralleled to Route 7 through Branchville, Georgetown, Norwalk, and Wilton; it is joined by Silvermine River and later flows through the Norwalk Harbor and just like the Shepaug River, it ends in the Long Island Sound. Fishing and oystering is still a recreational sport at the river’s mouth in Norwalk. On October 14 – 17 1955, there was a tropical storm that flooded the Norwalk River along with many other rivers in Connecticut; 12 – 14 inches of water above flood stage. The storm caused devastation all over Norwalk, bridges and dams were knocked out. Millions of dollars’ worth of damages and many lives were lost.
