The Munsee Indians occupied what is present day Fairfield County, Mainly Greenwich, CT.  Although most of  the Munsee tribe was located in Pennsylvania and, southern New York and southern New Jersey.  The first recorded contact with Europeans was in 1524 when Giovanni Di Verrazano sailed into what is currently New York Harbor.  Shortly there after The Munsee were quickly exposed to European diseases such as Smallpocks and Influenza.  The Munsee who survived the diseases were eventually forced inland.  Some Munsee retreated to Ontario Canada , while others decided to join the Muhican Tribe and settled in present day Wisconsin.  As The Munsee tribe moved inland they began to follow their relatives , The Lenape people, who began to follow the teachings of the Moravian missionaries.  David Zeisberger was a missionary who in 1772 led the group of converted Christian Munsee to Ohio , where he hope this would avoid hostilities for the Christian Munsee.  Ten years later the Pennsylvania Malitia men, who were in search of Indians who raided settlements in Penn.  decided to kill 90 Christian Munsee (Men, Women and children) that they came upon in the village of Gadenhutten. alt

Interestingly enough the rest of the Christian Munsee followed Zeisberger to Ontario, Canada where they settled in a village which is presently known as Fairfield.  Could it be possible that the Munsee tribe named this village Fairlfield because of where they began, in south eastern Connecticut or also known as Fairfield County?  I believe that is the case and that with finding a new home in Ontario, Canada they felt that in some way it may have reminded them of Fairfield County.  Is there any connection between Fairfield in Canada and Fairlfield in CT that leads back to the Munsee?
