The Naugatuck River goes through Naugatuck Valley (40 mile distance) which includes towns such as Beacon Falls, Prospect, Ansonia, Naugatuck, Waterbury, Oxford, and a few more. Several Algonquin tribes first inhabited areas down along the river, settling in as home ground. The name Naugatuck actually comes from the Algonquin word meaning "lone tree by the fishing place". One of the main Algonquin tribes that inhabited the area was known was the Wappinger tribe. Years later, English colonists started settling in, and making the river's usage more industrialized. Despite the rivers upgrade in usage, people to this day still see it as a great river to fish in when the currents aren't as strong.
