The Mystic River comes from the words "Missi-Tuk", of Algonquin language, meaning a "great river whose water are driven by waves"; and "muhs-uhtuq" derived from the Wampanoag language meaning "big river". The river is located in the western part of Connecticut and is 7 miles long. When the river was originally discovered by Native Americans and colonists, it was used to raise crops and fish for food. Between the years of 1630-1640 much was added around the river area such as a bridge, colony, the European's first ship built in Massachusetts. Present day, the river is home to the Maritime Museum. Pollution has decreased the vast amount of fish and other species of whom used to live within these waters.
