The Quinnipiac River is located entirely in Connecticut and a total length 45.5 miles long. The name was given to the river by the Algonquins as the "long water land" for it's open mouth at the end of the river into the Long Island Sound. This name also corresponds to the Quinnipiac Tribe, who used the river as a main source of food, fishing for oysters and other various fish. In 1614 other settlers came and began building homes along the river. Until the 1960's the Quinnipiac River was a consistent supply of food for the many settlers who came to live along it, however because of pollution the Quinnipiac River became something to steer clear of until recent initiatives to clean the river began. The Quinnipiac River is parallel to the Quinnipiac Trail and is still seen as a beautiful site today.
