The Susquehanna River is one of the oldest major rivers in the world.  The River is 464 miles long and is the longest river on the east cost in the U.S. that falls into the Atlantic Ocean and when its watershed is included, it is the 16th largest river in the U.S. and the longest river in the United States without commercial boat traffic.

The Susquehannock tribe, from which the name Susquehanna comes from, lived along the Susquehanna River all the way from the north part of the Chesapeake Bay through to New York Sate. Susquehannock means “People of the Muddy River”. These people of the muddy river were hunters, fishermen and farmers and known to have traded with early Jamestown settlers, along with the French and the Dutch.

Another reference to the Susquehanna River is a religious tie to the Latter Day Saint movement and its members. Joseph Smith Jr. and Oliver Cowdery receieved their priesthood and the first Latter Day Saint baptisms occurred in the Susquehanna River. Smith and Cowdery said that they were visited on May 15, 1829, by the resurrected John the Baptist the two men were given the Priesthood following his visit, Smith and Cowdery baptized each other in the river. Later on in the year, they said they were also visited near the river by the apostles Peter, James and John These events also took place along the Susquehanna River, although a specified location along the river is unknown.

From a more American War perspective, at the source of the dam is Ostego Lake, in Cooperstown, New York which is the monument site of General James Clinton for his expedition down the Susquehanna River in 1779. Currently, many Pennsylvanians and tourists in the area often go boating and fishing in the Susquehanna River.
