Oneonta, New York is located about 165 miles north of Manhattan and only 4.4 square miles. In the Iroquois language, Oneonta translates to “place of open rocks” which is referred to the “table rocks” overlooking part of the town. In the earliest time, the Paleo-Indians resided in this area focusing on big-game hunting. Following them were other tribes associated more with gathering and farming. By 1000AD these Native American tribes grouped together representing Iroquois-speaking Indians, which based their food on corn, beans, and squash and making permanent settlement in Oneonta. By 1775, settlers began to also populate the area. These settlers were mainly Germans and Dutch. In 1779, General James Clinton and his Continental Army went down through the Susquehanna River to partner with General John Sullivan and his team to take the area away from the Iroqouis. When things settled down, many settlers began to grow the community and start the foundation for what is seen as Oneonta today.  The town is also now home to SUNY Oneonta.
