The Kittatinny Mountains are located in northwestern New Jersey and travel along the northeast-southwest axis of the Garden State. The name for the mountain is derived from the Lenape Native American word meaning "endless hill" or "great mountain". Interestingly enough, the highest point in the state of New Jersey is the highest peak of the Kittatinny Mountains, which is 1,803 feet (550 m). Located in High Point state park, tourists and nearby civilians can reach this point by walking along a paved road to the top. It was known that the Paleo Indians inhabited the Kittatinny Mountains, where members of the tribes would hunt, fish, and gather plants. Moreover, the Lenape Native Americans frequently engaged in the deciduous forest where a variety of nut trees could be picked and harvested. Two thousand years ago, the Lenape Native Americans would continue to collect acorns, walnuts, chestnuts, and butternuts. Lastly, the fresh water streams along the Kittatinny Mountains provided a wonderful resource for water and fish.
