hohokusHo-Ho-Kus is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey. It was incorporated as a borough in 1908, from what had orginially been the Borough of Orvil. In the 1700's homes began being built and farms cultivated. During the 1800's Ho-Ho-Kus became a center of industrial and commercial activity with mills producing textiles, grains, paper, and lumber. It developed along the banks of the Ho-Ho-Kus Brook and the Saddle River. Gradually, Ho-Ho-Kus began to become the quiet, suburban community it is today. Although it is no longer home to industrial industries, it does offer numerous professional offices and stores and businesseHohokus brooks.

There are many meanings behind the name of Ho-Ho-Kus, some including an adulteration of the Lenni Lenape term "Mah-Ho-Ho-Kus," meaning "red cedar." Others include the Indian word for running water, cleft in the rock or under the rock, and the name from the Chihohokies Indians whose chief lived here. The "Ho" part means joy or spirit and the rest of the name hohokes means a kind of bark of a tree. The Lenni Lenape Indians who lived here, walked the paths, fished the streams, hunted the forests and toiled the land. They had three distinct sub-divisions- the Minsies, in the northern part, the Unamis in the central, and the Unalachtigo in southern Jersey. in 1758 the Minsies relinquished their land but reserved the right to hunt and fish. Most of the Native Americans left New Jersey in 1730.
