Squam Lake is an Abnaki name that means "salmon".

Covering 6,791 acres, Squam Lake is the second largest lake in New Hampshire, with Lake Winnipesaukee being the largest. It is located in central New Hampshire, 40 miles north of Concord, the capital of New Hampshire. The largest town center on the lake is Holderness. The lake drains via a short natural channel into Little Squam Lake, and then through a dam at the head of the short Squam River into the Pemigewasset, located in Ashland.

The Abnakis were the earliest inhabitants of Squam Lake. The Abnakis originally referred to Squam as Keeseenunknipee which means "the gooslake in the highlands". The white settlers who followed shortly after referred to Squam as Kesumpe, as a shortened version of the original Abnaki name. In the 1800s, the lake was given the name Asquam and then in the 1900s was finally named Squam, and it has kept its name for over a century now.

Squam Lake has been able to maintain its "pristine and undeveloped landscape". The lack of transportation to the lake has helped it remain undeveloped. The closest means of transportation is the railway in Ashland, which does not go directly to the lake. Today, the interstate highway brings visitors into Ashland where the center of commerce exists for the Squam Lake area.
