mapHackensackhackensack is a city in Bergen County. It was officially named New Barbadoes Township until 1921. RThe population of Hackensack is approximately 43,000. However, the daytime population more than triples due to commercial, professional, or personal needs. The city is now known for a great diversity of neighborhoods and is located approximately 12 miles northwest from Midtown Manhattan. It is also about 7 miles from the George Washington Bridge, making it an easy commute to New York City.

The first inhabitants of the area were the Lenni Lenape, an Algonquian oratampeople. They lived along the valley of the Ackingsah-sack, meaning stony ground, which is now the Hackensack River. Settlement of the area by the Dutch West India Company on the Hudson River began in the 1630s, leading to the establishment of Bergen in 1660. Chief Oratam, chief of the Lenni Lenape, deeded the land along the Hackensack River to the Dutch in 1665. In 1667, it was taken by the English, but kept its Dutch name. In 1675, the East Jersey Legislature established the administrative districts and in 1683, Bergen was officially recognized as an independent county. The seal of Bergen County has this date, and includes an image of an agreement between the settlers and the natives. On NOvermber 21, 1921, New Barbadoes Township received its charter to incorporate as a city. It officially took on the name Hackensack, a named derived from its original inhabitants, the Lenni Lenape.
