Canobie Lake is not a Quinnipiac name but an Abanaki name that means “abundant water”.

Canobie Lake is a 375-acre body of water located in Rockingham County of southern New Hampshire, located in the towns of Salem and Windham. On the east shore of the lake, in Salem, an amusement park was established which is known as Canobie Lake Park. Houses line the borders of the lake and it outflows to Policy Brook which then goes to the Spicket River. The Spicket River starts at Island Pond in Derry, New Hampshire and travels down south towards the Merrimack River in Lawrence and Methuen, Massachusetts. Canobie Lake is predominately and abundantley spring-fed which also serves as the water supply for the town of Salem. Thus, no persons are allowed to swim in it. It is only strictly allowed for boats and fishing.

The type of fish that can be found in Canobie Lake are largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, spotted bass, white bass, striped bass, crappies, walleye, catfish, and trout.

Local Indian tribes that inhabitated New Hampshire were the Abanaki's and Pennacook's. However, the tribe that was centralized in central and southern New Hampshire, near Canobie Lake, was the Pennacook tribe. Even though Canobie Lake is an Abanaki word that means "abudant water", the Pennacook's were very close relatives with the Abanaki's and were frequently classed with the Abanaki tribe. The Pennacook tribe also inhabitated northeastern Massachussetts and the southernmost part of Maine. In 1600, it was estimated that there was about 2,000 Pennacook Indians and in 1676 there was an estimated 1,250.
