219 The Sun

The Sun was a New York newspaper published 1833 until 1950. The publication began in 1833, as a morning newspaper. In 1887, an evening edition was introduced. In 1916, both editions were bought by an individual Frank Munsey and merged with the New York Press, and later merged with New York Herald. In 1950, it merged with New York World-Telegram. In 1966, it became part of New York World Tribune and folded the 1967.

In the context of the book titled Ragtime, The Sun newspaper published the killing of the firehouse men, a crime lead by Coalhouse Walker. Coalhouse visited his fiancee Sarah on his return back to his station, he took his usual route along the fire house lane, past the station house of the Emerald Isle Engine, where a company of volunteers are known for the dash of their parade uniforms. Coalhouse was unaware that he had been noticed by these men and his way of dressing and the type of car he drove provocated them. On this fateful day, his car was stopped and the volunteers advised him that he was travelling on a private toll road and they demanded he presented a pass indicating he was a resident of the city or pay a toll fee of twenty-five dollars which he refused to pay. He reported the incident to the Chief of the company who did nothing to address his complaint. He left his car there and walked few minutes where he saw a police officer who he reported the matter. He was disappointed when he did not get the justice he expected. By the time he returned to where he left his car, it was moved to the field and the car was messed up with human excreta. He was made fun of by the Fire Chief and the volunteer men. Two policemen drove to the scene one of the men was the first police he had reported to. The fire Chief told the police his car was moved to the field because he had left his car in front of the fire station, that it was an offence blocking the station. Upon hearing this, the police officer placed him under arrest and was later released under bail to go to work. He tried to see different lawyers to help him fight for justice, he wanted his car restored to it's original state and an apology tendered to him, this he did not get. His uncontrolled anger caused the death of many firehouse workers.

He planned the destructive havoc with some other men, he vowed to continue to burn firemen and destroy fire workers until Fire Chief of Volunteers was turned over to justice and his automobile restored.
