044 Socialist Alliance of Artists of the Lower East Side

Socialism is the theory or system of social organization that is in favor of ownership and control of the means of production and distribution of capital, land, and commodities in the community. The socialist economies are based on production for use and direct profit of economic gains for the demands of human needs. The goods and services for consumption are distributed throughout markets and income distribution is based on individual merit and contribution.  Libertarian socialists and anarchists refuse to use the state while building socialism. They believe that socialism must rise spontaneously or from the bottom up. Direct worker-ownership is promoted through independent work places. Socialists believe that human behavior is shaped by the social environment. They believe that individuals should be freed from alienating work and people should be able to pursue their own interests and talents without being pressured to work for others. There are unequal social norms that fail to provide equal opportunities for everyone to maximize their potential as individuals. There is too much worry imposed on satisfying the wants of the market rather than human needs. Socialists believe that capitalism is a faulty economic system because it serves the interests of the wealthy and not the lower classes. They are in support of social equality and distribution of wealth on the basis of one's contribution to society. In addition, socialists are in favor of an economic arrangement that favors society as a whole.

The Socialist Artists' Alliance of the Lower East Side was an organization in Ragtime that was lead by Tateh, its president. The alliance supports the artists and the individual profit of their own work. It defends their personal labor and fights against the conformity of capitalism. Evelyn Nesbitt is informed of his participation while inquiring about the status of his family. Although Nesbitt originates from a rather lower class family, her fame has been able to provide her with a lifestyle of those of the higher class.  Evelyn Nesbitt ventures into the lower east side and is rather naiive about the immigrant status and the lives of the lower class. While attending a meeting of the The Socialist Artists' Alliance of the Lower East Side with Tateh and his daughter, Evelyn Nesbitt is recognized by Emma Goldman, the speaker during the meeting. When Tateh realizes who Nesbitt is he experiences immediate feelings of betrayal and flees from Evelyn Nesbitt forever. Evelyn Nesbitt represents exactly the opposite of the values that Tateh possesses. However, Emma Goldman takes on an important role in the novel by taking Evelyn Nesbitt home with her. She preachers her values of truth and feminism to Nesbitt and forces her to realize the way she lives her life. Goldman viewed Nesbitt as a product of capitalism who is full of lies. Emma Goldman is able to convice Evelyn Nesbitt that although they are very different women, there lives have many similarities as well. The only differences they possess have to do with different circumstances and choices that were made.
