015 The Little Girl

The family mentioned in Chapter Three consisted of: Mameh, Tateh, and the Little Girl in a pinafore. They worked very hard, sang, and even told jokes to one another. They worked by sewing garments and clothing. Even The Little Girl worked with her parents. The parents received a letter telling them that their daughter had to attend school. This made it very difficult for the parents, since they counted on their daughter to bring her contributions to the table. Immigrants were at the bottom of the economic system. They needed everyone in the family to help out in order to survive. This was the era where children were working instead of attending school to help their families. When The Little Girl becomes ill, Evelyn Nesbit decides to take care of her while Tateh leaves for work. By this time, Mameh is out of the picture, Tateh banishes her from the family and she leaves to work for someone else. (Picture on left in not the little girl mentioned in the story)

Around 1901, Theodore Roosevelt took office and it was also the rise of immigrating launches. Ragtime takes place during this era. Immigrants from Ireland and from Eastern Europe came through Ellis Island. New Yorkers despised the immigrants, in the novel New Yorkers state that the immigrants were known to be disgusting human beings; New Yorkers did not like the idea of immigrants coming in through Ellis Island. The restriction on immigrants became the “clash of culture” with Irish, Japanese, and even Catholics; this was known as the anti-immigrant propaganda. The federal government excluded unwelcomed immigrants; such as prostitutes, convicts, the mentally ill, and diseased. For the Little Girl’s family it was survivor of the fittest. They weren’t treated like the regular New Yorkers or other Americans in the area.
