Cupola

According to Britannica Encyclopedia, a cupola is a small dome in architecture that often

resembles an overturned cup. It is usually placed on a circular or square base or on pillars. They are often used as lookouts or sources of light when placed atop lanterns. Cupolas were first used in Islamic architecture in the 8th century and built on corners of mosques in the Middle East and India. They gained popularity in Russia during the 17th and 18th centuries. Many styles of cupolas were integrated in to English domestic architecture. It then became part of U.S. architectural design during the post-Revolutionary Federalist era. Cupolas can be seen on City Hall in New York City and the dome of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. (“Cupola (architecture)”).

In Ragtime, Father, a highly respected businessman and great explorer, is on his way Cupola from new rochelle city hallto City Hall to pay a visit to the police. He went to tell them all he knew about a character of criminal named Coalhouse, a black man who was supposed to marry a young black girl who had been living with his family, named Sarah. A cupola is mentioned to describe where the flag on top of City Hall, a gift given by Father, flew.

The New Rochelle City Hall was built in 1871. The building was destroyed in 1965 to make way for Memorial Highway and the cupola was shipped to the city yard. It lay there for years until an offer to take it was made by the rowing club. In 1974, a crane was used to place the cupola on top of the rowing club.
