Sándor Ferenczi was a Hungarian psychoanalyst born in Miskolc, Hungary in 1873. According to Sanford Ferenczithe Britannica Encyclopedia, he is best known for his psychoanalytic theory. He received his M.D. from the University of Vienna in 1894 and soon after served as an army doctor, specializing in neurology. In 1908, he became part of Sigmund Freud’s inner circle, the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society and traveled with him on many journeys.  Soon after, Ferenczi founded the Hungarian Psychoanalytic Society in 1913 and became a professor at the University of Budapest in 1919 (“Sandor Ferenczi”).

Later on, Ferenczi diverged to exploring improvements for therapeutic technique. He believed in free association and wrote his ideas of psychotherapy in The Development of Psychoanalysis with Otto Rank in 1924. In 1929, Ferenczi changed his view of therapy. His technique “favoured the creating of a loving, permissive atmosphere by the therapist to counterbalance the rejection and emotional deprivation the patient had experienced with his parents (“Sandor Ferenczi”). Ferenczi’s claim that “therapists could openly express their affection for the patient and could even encourage him to act out childhood experiences was criticized by other psychoanalysts” (“Sandor Ferenczi”).

Ragtime has an ongoing theme about sex and society in America. The story discusses the magician Houdini and Freud, Stanley Hall, Jung, Brill, Ernest Jones, and Ferenczi in front of Clark Universityhow he was “passionately in love with his ancient mother…” (35). Houdini was “destined to be…the last of the great shameless mother lovers, a nineteenth-century movement” (35). He wants to attend a series of lectures given by Freud, who later developed the psychosexual stages of development, at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. Freud first arrived in New York with Carl Jung and Ferenczi, who were followers of Freud. While in New York Ferenczi is excited by a street artist’s work and “declares his happiness at finding the ancient art of silhouette flourishing on the streets of the New World” (37).
